Waterproofing Your Basement For Spring Showers

Waterproofing Your Basement For Spring Showers

As temperatures start to climb over the next few weeks, the snow will start to fade away, but all of that water has to go somewhere, and hopefully it stays away from your home. Due to the snowmelt and rain during spring, water damage is a common occurrence in homes. Excess water can enter your basement through poor sealing in egress windows or cracks in your foundation. Once water enters your home, it can cause immediate damage to your walls and carpeting if you have a finished basement. If you have a sump pump, keeping it in good condition is key to keeping your basement water-free.

A sump pump removes water that accumulates in what’s called a sump basin. These water basins are typically found in basements and they collect naturally flowing groundwater or drain water. A sump pump is installed to make sure these basins don’t overflow, keeping the area around your home and your basement dry.

Depending on the water table surrounding your home, your basement may or may not have a sump pump. Homes built with a water table higher than their foundation, have a higher risk of basement flooding and are typically equipped with a sump pump.

For homes that are more susceptible to flooding, a sump pump may be the most important part of flood prevention, so it is crucial that it works properly. Sump pumps run on the electrical system in your home, so if you don’t have a generator a backup battery is essential because a simple power outage can stop your sump pump from running. Depending on the severity of the storm, without a working sump pump the basin can overflow and flood your basement.

Come springtime, an inspection of your sump pump is recommended. Be sure to keep the valve clear of dirt and other debris, and clear away any obstructions from the discharge line. The discharge line should be directed away from your home and is where the water from the basin is sent. During the early spring when temperatures are still low, this pipe may freeze and cause water to backup into the basin, making a flood more likely.

Maintaining your sump pump and drainage system can save you money on avoidable flood damage. Not sure if you should invest in a sump pump?
