Sheila G. Of Loni M Designs

Sheila G., creator of furniture line Loni M Designs, launched Loni M after spending 20 years in the fashion industry. Looking for a new challenge, Sheila jumped into the world of interior design, translating her expertise in style and fabrics to furniture. Loni M Designs offers a mix of pillows, chairs, ottomans and sofas that reflect Sheila’s eclectic and vibrant style. She utilizes bold colors and unique patterns inspired by the Californian lifestyle to bring a splash of color to home décor.

Sheila is also the designer of this week’s Fab Furnishings Giveaway prize, two fashion throw pillows.

TotalHousehold: Why did you decide to make the move from fashion to furniture?

Sheila: My original attraction to fashion in my youth was to the styles and textures of fine furniture, but I lacked any clue as to how to venture into that field. However, when I looked at clothing there was someone I could instantly relate to—a role model. That was Willie Smith. Though there were very few successful African-American fashion designers I could connect with and pattern my career after at that time, I assumed if Willie could do it, so could I. I had a successful run in fashion design, but found myself at a crossroads feeling the need for a new challenge. My thought was, could I transfer my skill set and sense of style to furniture? So I set out to discover the answer.

TotalHousehold: When did you start your interior design business and the Loni M Designs line?

Sheila: I started this venture almost 4 years ago, initially looking at a plethora of fabrics, designs and sketching out numerous silhouettes. I began manufacturing some of the items in the Loni M Designs line 3 years ago.

TotalHousehold: What do you love about furniture design?

Sheila: I love the creative process of combining form, fabrics and colors. For example, designing a sofa that is both functional and eye-catching.

TotalHousehold: When working with clients as an interior designer, what are some the most important things you cover before starting work?

Sheila: First, I want to connect with the clients' vision of the design. Do they have a particular style, preferred colors or fabrics? The end game is to provide the pathway from their vision to their desired results.

TotalHousehold: How would you describe your own design style?

Sheila: Eclectic. I love the challenge of incorporating different styles and genres so that there's a flow. This often creates a focal point in the room that inspires interesting conversations.

TotalHousehold: What is the first step in designing a room?

Sheila: Finding out the function of the room. Is it for family? Entertaining? Or more of a showpiece?

TotalHousehold: Do you use sustainable and green materials in your designs and the Loni M Designs line?

Sheila: At present I'm not using sustainable or green material, but I've discussed this with my partner. We plan to gradually incorporate those materials into our production.

TotalHousehold: Why do you think it's important for homeowners to consult interior designers?

Sheila: The benefit of consulting with an interior designer is our expertise in that area. Clients most times will have an idea of what they want, but aren't sure of the process or if they can make the best choices. There's a reason why we have CPAs, attorneys and contractors. We specialize.

TotalHousehold: How can people use accents to refresh a room when they're on a tight budget?

Sheila: One can change the entire look of a room by painting one wall, changing the throw rug or swapping out pillows. Everyone has a bit of creativity. Use it!
