A Guide To Vertical Gardening

A Guide To Vertical Gardening

Often times your outdoor space may be cluttered with chairs, tables and other furniture leaving little to no room for plants. Vertical gardening or living walls are a great alternative to incorporate fresh plants and decor without taking up any valuable space. They add a design statement that is unique to any other decor. Check out this guide that will help get you on your way to building your own vertical garden.

1. Picking the plants you want to showcase in your wall garden is not only a fun, but can also be beneficial depending on the plants you choose. A green wall will naturally improve the quality of air in its environment, purifying the air and releasing clean oxygen. Even though all plants are capable of doing so, certain plants can filter out different hazardous toxins, like Chrysanthemums and Bamboo Palm. When choosing your plants keep your environment in mind to ensure that you’re picking out plants that will survive in your surroundings and filter out many different toxins. Add a couple of your favorite plants in the mix to add a personal touch.

2. You can build your vertical garden in many creative ways. A common and simple method consists of a vertical structure with a series of shelves. These shelves can hold plant pots and can also hang planting containers. This method allows you to move your plants around and place them in areas of direct sunlight. Because there is no built-in irrigation system remember to regularly water and trim your plants when necessary. To eliminate the use of planting pots, contact your local carpenter to help you build a wall structure with built-in planting cells. Planting cells will allow you to grow your plants vertically while still providing the structural support to hang against a wall. Whether you plan on building a large or small wall, consider having a contractor install a built-in irrigation system to properly water your plants.

3. Build your vertical garden in areas that provide plenty of sunlight. However, make sure that the space you choose for your vertical garden is open so that enough air can circulate over your plants. The roots of your plants require a lot of oxygen to grow and be healthy so make sure your wall structure is not too dense or tightly built, since this could prevent proper air flow.
