7 Outdoor Shed Repurposing Ideas

Outdoor sheds are versatile spaces, so let your creativity meet necessity when deciding on how to repurpose this area. We’ve come up with a list of 7 different remodel ideas that will add purpose and utility to your old shed.

1. Guest Room: With the proper insulation, electric, heating and cooling systems, your outdoor shed can turn into a livable space for guests. Without having to worry about having a crowded home, an outdoor guest room gives guests their own privacy and space.

2. Outdoor Office Space: By adding electric, heating and cooling systems, and a couple of windows you can turn a dingy shed into a year round outdoor office space. A fresh coat of bright paint, a desk, and of course a comfy swivel chair will easily turn this area into your private workspace.

3. Outdoor Play Room: As your kids play outside, an outdoor play room may be just the space they need to cool down from running in the sun. You can store a mini fridge in the playroom to hold water and snacks for them to easily fuel up between games of tag. Also, a space like this can hold all of their old toys and larger ones that take up space in your home.

4. Yoga And Exercise Studio: With natural sunlight beaming in from the windows and the privacy of your own studio you can peacefully do yoga or other exercises in the comfort of your backyard. Having a separate studio allows you to take a step away from busy everyday life and gives you a moment to take care of yourself.

5. Greenhouse Shed: A greenhouse shed unit combines your love for gardening and your need for storage space. You can start your garden while still being able to provide storage for your gardening tools. This unit is a great space saver if your limited with backyard space.

6. Staycation Room: You can recreate your favorite vacation spot by transforming your shed into a themed space. With the right types of lighting, furniture, and paint you can transport you and your family to the beaches of the Bahamas or vineyards of Italy. This space can be your own personal getaway.

7. Outdoor Sitting Space: If you don’t have a patio or patio cover, an outdoor sitting space can be a place for family and friends to take a seat in the shade while the kids play around. You can remove the shed doors completely or make them into sliding doors to open up the front area. Adding chairs and a table will make it into a comfortable entertainment space as well.

To get a better idea on shed remodels, we spoke with a homeowner whose old shed was recently transformed into a yoga studio. She informed us that generally the contractor obtains the permits and the homeowners provide a current survey of the property. In this situation because the shed stayed the same, meaning no addition of electric, plumbing, or heating systems, a permit would not be necessary. But, if the she decided on expanding, permits would then be required. To fit the area for a yoga studio the contractor added and expanded windows making sure that some were high enough to stay clear of inverted poses as well as enhancing the floors and walls so they were suitable to do yoga on.

It’s hard to remember everything about a remodel, but a contractor has an expert eye on all of the details while keeping in mind the big picture. That’s why it’s important to know how you would like to repurpose your shed ahead of time so your contractor can help you achieve the transformation.
