3 Greenhouse Design Ideas For Your Backyard

Gardening isn’t always the easiest, especially if you find yourself struggling to find the best space to grow many kinds of plants. If you’re an avid gardener and find yourself in this predicament, consider building your own greenhouse to house your beautiful gardens. Greenhouses allow you to grow your favorite plants in a well enclosed space and provide an optimal habitat for your plants. There are many different types of greenhouses, the three common styles are lean to greenhouses, free standing greenhouses, and greenhouse sheds. Don’t forget to check your local permit and building codes when deciding which greenhouse to build.

Lean To Greenhouse

Lean to greenhouses are structures that are attached to the side of a building and are ideal for smaller backyards. What’s most convenient about this structure is that you can enter your greenhouse without having to step outside, especially during snowy or rainy days. However, because it is connected to an existing building your options are limited when it comes to finding a location that receives optimal sunlight. In addition to sunlight, your greenhouse is going to need proper ventilation inlets and outlets and a water and power supply. This will be easy if you are able to connect the building’s water and power systems to your greenhouse structure, and will save you time and money by avoiding separate water and power line construction.

Free Standing Greenhouse

Free standing greenhouses are separate structures, giving you the freedom to make them as large or small and place them in areas of optimal sunlight. Because this structure is set apart from nearby power and water sources, a separate heating, electric, and water system will need to be installed.

Greenhouse Shed

A greenhouse shed is a structure that is designed half as a storage shed and the other half as a greenhouse. A greenhouse shed combines the advantages and disadvantages of a lean to and free standing greenhouse. Like a lean to greenhouse, this structure has limited interior space and sun exposure, which cause issues with ventilation and temperature control. However, a greenhouse shed is a suitable structure for smaller backyards that do not have enough storage space. But like a free standing greenhouse, greenhouse sheds can be designed and placed in your desired size and location. Although, this means that a separate heating, power, and water system will have to be built for the structure. Keep in mind that if your greenhouse and shed rooms are not divided or well insulated, the shed room will most likely soak up any heating and cooling you apply to your greenhouse room.

Consult your contractor before you get started to help you decide which greenhouse design is best for you. A contractor will be able to give you their expert opinion and ideas when creating a design fit for your home.
