Manchester Safe and Lock was founded in 1964 by Marcel Lapierre. He worked out of the basement of his home for several years before finally moving to a retail location on Main Street in Manchester. In 1978, there was a devastating fire, which put Manchester Safe and Lock back in Lapierre's basement until he found a new site on East Middle Turnpike. Robert Mahoney began working as an apprentice locksmith in 1980. Eight years later, Marcel Lapierre retired and Mahoney purchased the business. In 1995, he bought a building on Main Street, where the company is currently located. The store went through a series of renovation projects associated with the modernization of Downtown Manchester. Four apprentice locksmiths are currently employed by the company, which is run by Robert and his wife Janice Mahoney. They await the time when their son Robert Jr. will be learning his father's trade.
